About this search & how to read results

Data Sources

Results are assembled from multiple Australian Government registers in real time:

  • ASIC Company Register — Entity name, ACN, status (Registered, Deregistered, Strike-off Action, External Administration), type, class, subclass, and registration/deregistration dates.
  • ASIC Business Names Register — Business names registered under the Business Names Registration Act 2011, linked to their holder entity by ABN. Updated weekly.
  • ABR (Australian Business Register) — ABN, entity type, GST registration, business and trading names, state, postcode, and ABN status (Active/Cancelled). Also indicates ACNC (charity) registration where applicable.
  • ORIC (Office of the Registrar of Indigenous Corporations) — Corporation size, registered native title body status, reports lodged, and ACNC registration, sourced from data.gov.au open datasets.

Entity Names vs. Business Names

These are two distinct concepts that are easy to confuse:

  • An entity name is the legal name under which a company, body corporate, or other registered entity exists on the ASIC Company Register. It is tied to the ACN and is the official trading identity of the legal person.
  • A business name is a trading name registered under the Business Names Registration Act 2011. Any individual (sole trader), partnership, trust, or company can register a business name as an alias for trading purposes. Business names are registered against an ABN.

In practice: if Smith & Jones Pty Ltd (entity name) operates its café under the name The Corner Brew (business name), both names will appear in this search — linked via the company's ABN. Company cards show any current business names in a blue pill on the card and a dedicated ASIC Business Names section in the expanded detail panel.

Understanding Status Differences

The same entity may show different statuses across registers because each regulator tracks different things:

  • A company can be "Registered" on ASIC but show an ABN status of "Cancelled" on the ABR — this means the legal entity still exists but has cancelled its ABN (e.g. it is dormant or no longer trading).
  • A company "Deregistered" on ASIC may still show an "Active" ABN if the ABR record has not yet been updated, or if the ABN was used for a sole trader or partnership that still operates.
  • ACNC status appears as a tag when the entity is registered as a charity with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission.
  • ORIC data appears when an entity is registered under the Corporations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) Act 2006. ORIC data is sourced from periodic open data snapshots and may not reflect the most recent changes.

Register Strip

Each result card shows a coloured register strip on the left indicating which registers the entity appears in:

  • ASIC — Blue, if the entity is found on the ASIC register.
  • ABR — Orange, if an ABN record was found.
  • ACNC — Purple, if registered with the charities commission.
  • ORIC — Green, if registered with the indigenous corporations register.

Search Tips

  • Search by company or entity name to find all matches (partial names work). Results from both the ASIC Company Register and the ASIC Business Names Register are shown.
  • Search by business name to find who trades under that name — the holder entity's ABN details will be shown on the expanded card.
  • Search by ACN (9 digits) for an exact ASIC company register lookup.
  • Search by ABN (11 digits) for a direct ABR lookup — if the entity also has an ACN, ASIC data is retrieved automatically.
  • Results are paginated — use the Previous/Next buttons to browse large result sets.
